Post by Randy DodgeI've asked before for data and haven't seen much in order to do comparisons.
I've checked the Aliant servers but can't check on Rogers.
On Aliant, nf.general has 132,520 articles
wanted 99,648
sci.geo.sat-nav 1,376
I've asked you in the past to please check equivalent groups on your ISP
for a comparison. Pick a non-NF group that has 100,000 articles in it and
see what the loading time is. Also, what newsreader are you using and how
do you have it configured for article loading/retention expiration, etc.
Randy,
As of about 15:15 on 2004-12-03, I'm finding that it's taking about 15
seconds to download a message body associated with nf.general headers that
I've previously downloaded. Earlier this morning it was almost
instantaneous. Here's the information that your requested:
Using NNTP server: news.nl.rogers.com
Connected via Rogers ip: 205.251.79.72
The Rogers news server has the following article counts:
nf.general: 193,858 headers and 65,535 articles
nf.wanted: 149,563 headers and 65,535 articles
sci.geo.sat-nav: 339 headers and 339 articles
It would appear that Rogers puts a 64MB (2^16) limit on the maximum article
retention count.
I'm using two different news readers. Both readers exhibit identical
download delays.
Agent v 2.0/32.652
Outlook Express 6 v 65.535
I've tried several retention settings in both new readers and none of these
changes have solved the slow download behaviour of nf.general. My current
Outlet Express setting is to delete news messages 5 days after being
downloaded.
I can not find any 'non-nf' groups on the Rogers news server that contain
over 100,000 as you requested (there are not even any that contain the
maximum 65,535 articles). I have also searched for a publicly available
news server that contains a group with over 100,000 articles and I can not
find any of these either. I thought news.microsoft.com might have some
really big groups but I couldn't find any with over 30,000 messages. Randy,
do you know of such a server and group, so that I can perform the test that
you've requested?
I hope this is the type of information that you'll find helpful.
