CALL FOR NEW GROUP: nf.digital.photo

I call for nf.digital.photo to be created

Wondering if anyone else is enjoying the pictures being posted in
free.nf.binaries as much as I am. There seem to be a fair amount of people
posting and even more ppl looking as I get emails all the time from ppl who
I never see post in any nf.* saying the pics are nice.
I think a separate group anyway from the clutter of nf.general where people
would give posters from free.nf.binaries their honest opinions would be a
good thing. Just basic chat about interest and helpful links, discussions
relating to photography, tips and tricks to help others out.

Only binaries usenew groups are allowed to have. Please correct me if I'm
wrong here

We can use free.nf.binaries to view pics or online photo albums ( yahoo, msn
just to give an example.) Links to personal web sites.
This wouldnt be limited to just a place to view pictures it would be for
discussions, help , tips. Just general photo chat.

Hi,

I think this is a super idea. Lots of us would love to learn from those
kind enough to pass on their advice. I do get optimum use from my dig
camera.

I love viewing the pics and have told so many others about it - many had
never even heard of newsgroups.

Go for it!!!

Only a good thing if there's a size limit on attachments (I know this can be
done with web based forums, not sure about newsreader based ones). If you
don't, one photo could wipe out an entire server's space allocation for the
group, making pictures disappear as quickly as they are posted!

It's not a bad idea, but I can see it turning into something that was not
intended - a family album. There's nothing wrong with family pictures... for
family and friends, but it's not the kind of thing to post on a newsgroup.
Artistic photography is appreciated by a far wider audience.

Well Richie my intent was to have more of a discussion group rather then
posting of pictures and again maybe Randy Dodge or someone else could shed
some light on this if posting of pictures can be allowed?

If both could be done in the one group that would be great. But it was my
understanding that binary groups and discussion groups were separate ????

Good... that would be my preference - a non-binary group that maybe points
to pictures on your own server. It makes for more interesting discussion and
doesn't clog the thing up with pictures of baby Dwindle at 3months, 4 months
and 6.5 months...

So basically you want me to post something like, "Hey Steve, nice picture
you posted in free.nf.binaries. How did you get the lighting that way." To
which you'll probably respond "What picture are you talking about?"
Wouldn't it be easier to discuss and ask questions about a picture if I just
reply to the picture asking the question?

the term binary is used to refer to images/photographs that are attached
to an Email message. More generally it is a term used in computing to
describe files which "do not consist of text"

The name free.nf.binaries was chosen to depict that binaries COULD be
posted, not to limit the group to only binary postings. Discussions
regarding the files posted there are certainly welcome. The free.*
heirarchy is much more liberal than any other heirarchy, even alt.*
and of course nf.* The creation of a separate group just to discuss
material posted in free.nf.binaries is unnecessary. I wouldn't expect
to hear anything out of Randy Dodge, since after numerous calls for a
new binaries group he would not oblige, and rarely even bothers to
reply to such requests. This is how free.nf.binaries got started to
begin with. We had to look to a different heirarchy to get our
newsgroup started.

As far as files being seen by both Aliant and Rogers customers, I
think we found out before that the key size is about 50k, so if your
file is 50kb or smaller, everyone should be able to see it. This test
hasn't been done sine supernews/superweb added the group so I don't
know for sure if they get them as well, but I'd imagine they do.

So if Randy creates nf.digital.photo what will we be discussing? I assume
digital photos. Isn't that what is being discussed at free.nf.binaries?
Your're missing the point, we're already discussing a specific topic,
digital photographs. Regardless if a binaries newsgroup is for text or
pictures, it's being used for both. Why create a second newsgroup when the
one we have is working?

Isn't it true that Aliant customers can't see Rogers binaries and vice versa
in that group?

I dunno, I unsubscribed when it became too much of a take a picture of
anything at all and post it regardless of whether it was (subjectively) good
or not...

No that's not true. If pictures are kept under a certain size, then both
subscribers can see them. The ones that aren't viewable by both are
usually posted for both aliant and rr subscribers. I've posted several
for rr folks after having it emailed to me from aliant customers, and I
know others have done the same.

I know what you're saying and just b/c binaries is being used incorrectly
for the subject doesn't mean it should stay that way. If I wanted to post
about Photoshop tutorials or a nice photo site I found. I wouldn't post it
in binaries b/c that's not the forum for it. I think in another group you'd
end up with more ppl and discussion on the subject. Unlike whats happening
in binaries. I dont really post anything other then pictures and the odd "
that one was nice"
Someone just adding the new group list to their reader searches for NF.*
groups. They don't know what the hell binaries is. Where as a group specific
to the topic is easily identified.

What is NF specific or central about the abstract talk of digital
photography? Aren't there many site for this sort of technical talk? BTW,
I do enjoy nf.binaries very much and would loath to see people take their
photos elsewhere. As a general binary group it seems to function quite well
with many NF specific photos and general photos also.
