Discussion:
Call for New Newsgroup: Nf.sports

Dear Mr. Dodge:

It has been suggested several times in the past that the creation of a new
newsgroup dedicated specifically to sporting interests in and around
Newfoundland and Labrador, and sporting events of interest to
Newfoundlanders and Labradorians would be a good idea. I would like to renew
the call for the creation of an nf.sports newsgroup.

In the last year, the amount of sports commentary in nf.general was a little
excessive. I was one of the contributors to this excessiveness, and while I
originally opposed a separate newsgroup, I now feel it would be a good idea.
I enjoy the debating about sports with other Newfoundlanders and
Labradorians, however on far too many occasions last year the debates became
far too vocal (something I was certainly guilty of) and too frequent. A
separate sports group would enable us to have these debates without
subjecting the rest of nf.general to watching them, or taking up their
bandwidth unnecessarily to download these messages.

I would like to now put out a formal call for the creation of an nf.sports
newsgroup, and ask that we begin the organization procedure and voting ASAP.

Thank you for your time.

I'm not a sports fan, but I do know a lot of people that are. I think this
is a good idea Chris...

It's a good idea. Then I dont have to endure the habs/leafs posts anymore,
because both teams suck :-)

Hear, Hear...I second that.

Hockey Talk Dominates nf.general for 3/4's of the year. I think with the
number of posts each year, and the number of different people posting, they
deserve their own newsgroup.

I can't think of a new nf. group that's more needed than nf.sports. That
is, as long as all the hockey posters actually USE it if/when it is
created...

I'm monitoring the postings to gauge the level of support. So far, it's a
bit sparse. I'd really like to see some discussion of what such a group
would be used for, the more ideas the better. If it's just a group for
everyone to piss on each other's team and players, well that's not going to
cut it. If you want to see the group, drum up some support.

Mr Dodge, by my count we have already exceeded the number of posts that
requested and discussed nf.hiking - I don't know how or why you would think
the discussion on this has been sparse. There is an obvious interest in the
creation of this group.

I'd really like to see some discussion of what such a group
would be used for, the more ideas the better.
Well as stated previously, it would be used to discuss sporting events in
Newfoundland and Labrador, and sporting events or sporting-related events of
interest to Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. This covers several areas:
first of all, it covers the soccer tournaments T. Parsons was discussing
earlier this year, including posting of the results of games within the
tournament. It would cover anytime a team from NL travels away to compete
and someone would like to post the events - An example would be the fact
that I coach Tae Kwon Do locally, and several times our team has attended
regional championships in Halifax, and national championships in the rest of
the country, and I would love a newsgroup where I could post the results of
the athletes who competed to those who are interested (Whether or not you
are a participant in a sport, most sports fans are interested in how local
athletes perform). As to sporting related events, the recent hockey-pool
related traffic in nf.general indicates that a sizeable portion of readers
in that newsgroup would enjoy a forum whereby they could set up and run such
games, as well as exchange tips and strategy.

everyone to piss on each other's team and players, well that's not going to

Well, like it or not, that's simply part of sports. Try wearing a Montreal
jersey down to Mile One some game night and see how little you're ragged on.

On that note however, I would like to point that a sizeable number of
threads on nf.general also turn into pissing contests, whether they be about
sports, local politics, the war in Iraq, the death penalty, someone who
wants to date teenagers, or a link to a website. It's going to happen on any
usenet group, period. Obviously there should be a code of conduct, and as is
the case in nf.general, personal insults and foul/coarse language should
not be tolerated, but simple disagreements are going to happen in usenet.
Post by Randy Dodge
If you want to see the group, drum up some support.
As already stated and demonstrated, there is more than enough support for
this newsgroup - not only from those who wish to use it but from those who
wish to see sports talk taken out of nf.general. By my count, if only 2/3rds
of those who requested this group use it regularly it would be at least as
busy as the existing group nf.comp.misc, and busier than any of nf.arts,
nf.birds, nf.comp.linux, nf.gardening, nf.hiking, nf.paddling or nf.women.
(Please note, I am not belittling the importance of any of these groups - I
am simply stating that there will likely be more trafic in nf.sports than
most if not all of them. They are wonderful specialized groups that appeal
to a limited group of interested people, just as nf.sports would, also.)

I wholeheartedly believe the time for discussing whether or not there is
interest to create this group has passed, and we should now move on to
possible topics and mandates. Any suggestions for either, please post!

Chris
